WCBR

It all began in 2018 when the club organizers pulled us together for our inaugural year when the Encinitas Boardriders Club began competing. With the leadership and community support we initiated our mission of bringing our city closer together through our love for our beaches, surfing, and city.

The crew

Special thanks to the club’s founding members and organizers – Jason Shook, Carl Ware, Walt Pazanowski, Neil Bern, Thad Benshoof, Jeff Baldwin, and coach Rusty Phillipy. We had a great year participating in events with the Central Division teams which included San Clemente, Newport, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Carlsbad.

Our first year was oddly rainy, with most of the events involving umbrellas and rain gear – a memorable way to kick off the season that made us rally around the tent. Neck and neck with San Clemente for most contests, we were very proud to have taken second overall in our southern division and we made it to the finals where we competed with all teams – both Northern and Southern Division champions putting Encinitas on the map as a contender.

Another rainy weekend

With well-known riders and surf celebs such as Rob Machado, Ryan Burch, WSL announcer Chris Cote, and a host of highly dedicated surf families with up-and-coming competitors, we are a team worth watching. Some highlights from our inaugural year include Rob Machado’s time record-breaking 9+ double whammy ride, attained in under four minutes at Huntington. Our standout women – Ella McCaffray and Olivia Persana’s consistent excellent range scores in every event. Plus, our other standouts throughout the season were Sean Marceron, Taylor Clark, Jake Marshall, Levi Slawson, and Cole McCaffray. Their participation and contributions got an invite to the Jacks Pro Boardriders in Huntington Beach specialty event where we got second place by less than five points!
