The waves at Ponto were better than expected, as the forecast was predicting knee high waves with a howling onshore south wind ahead of an approaching storm front coming in that evening, but we arrived to clean and glassy waist high wedges with only a minor onshore seabreeze coming up around mid morning and keeping conditions fun through the afternoon. Cole McCaffray set the pace early in the first division of the day posting a 9.10 score on his double whammy wave with a series of critical backside snaps to get 18.20 points on our tally and set up our momentum that we carried through the rest of the day, earning himself the MVP award for this event. The vibes were high and it was a great community event with so many surfers staying through the day to support the other divisions and keep the camaraderie high. Each division continued the rally, with all but one division posting 30+ point totals to secure the overall victory. Encinitas Boardriders has the momentum right now, and is looking to carry it through to finish the season strong!
For the first time ever, Encinitas was able to win every single division in an event, and with this being the final regional event of the season, we secured first place overall for the season as well as our slot into the finals of the WCBR Championships! The Championships will take place on Friday May 17 at Lower Trestles, and a top 3 finish in the West Coast Champs will see us earn a slot into the USBR Champs the following day Saturday May 18. Come down to support your Encinitas Boardriders and make some noise at the championships next weekend!
