The Community Shows for Encinitas Boardriders Club Event at Seaside

The beach is always abuzz before a Boardriders event. Whether it’s Encinitas going against one of the other top surf towns or simply a community event going against our friends we surf with every day, the anticipation is always high. While it’s all for fun, everyone still wants to perform at the highest level. Saturday morning greeted us all with a smile. People showed up to crisp fall conditions, blue skies, sunshine, glassy waves, and a blistering swell pulsing through with… wait for it… 8-to-10-inch waves. Ha. Our beloved Seaside Reef really does deliver more often than not, but Saturday the surf just never woke up. That said, our town rips, and all competitors from ages 9 to 59 figured out a way to put on a stellar performance. This was a prime example of surfers literally making something out of nothing. From air reverses to carving 360s to pop-shove-its, there were some real standouts.

A side note from the day, it’s inspiring to see the development of these events and the locals finally figuring out what it’s all about. Looking back quite a few decades, the majority of us would see the photos and stories coming from Australia, not knowing what the heck they were really doing. Now with our whole California coast paralleling the Aussie surf club way of life, we’re experiencing what we’ve missed up until now.

Where else can you be with your family, best friends, and HEROES all at once? The club is a source of stories, lifetime bonds, rites of passage, and an amazing opportunity to link the young with the old, and everyone in between. Our society has enough stigma already when it comes to separation and segregation between age groups. Why? We’re all people, we all want to have fun, we all want the best for one another and WE ALL SURF. Who cares about age when life is more about attitude?

For years, a lot of surfers were never fans of “clubs” and rightfully so. Clubs are typically exclusive, overly structured and create more of that us vs. them attitude. But the Boardriders welcome all, and it has been overwhelmingly cool to see everyone coming together to share a good time and have a chance to give back. Everyone chips in, from setup to judging to commentating to food to awards and sponsorships to scholarships to breakdown… it takes a village and boy, do we ever have one. Encinitas is looking good!

Special thanks to the board of directors, all volunteers, sponsors and of course the club members and competitors, alike. Here’s to looking forward to some big events against some of the best surf towns in the world. You don’t have to compete to support. Don’t be afraid to take a day trip to support your club. Whether it’s in Carlsbad, San Clemente, Huntington or beyond, find a way to get there! The louder we yell the more support this team feels. See you at the beach. – Trout
