The Encinitas Boardriders Club is barely over a year old but already has almost 100 members. They are an affiliate of the state-wide West Coast Board Riders, an association of surf clubs that sponsors regional surf contests for the clubs to compete against each other.

Women’s team members: (L to R) Danielle Dickerson, Olivia Pessanha, Elle Sampiere, Annika Sofia Walden

Jason Shook, who lives in Cardiff and works as a lifeguard in Solana Beach, is a boardmember of the Encinitas club. He said they welcome surfers of all capabilities, from beginner to advanced, men and women, ages 14 – 99.

Board Riders Clubs are a huge way of life in Australia. Every city has a club and many of the clubs have their own clubhouse. This concept has taken off in California with the West Coast Board Riders Club.

They have sponsored club activities such as beach cleanups with the Rob Machado Foundation, BBQ nights with live music, and beach get-togethers. The club’s competitive team is fielded from interested members. Contests feature several men’s divisions and an open women’s division.

A brotherhood across generations, united through city surf clubs and friendly competition, with a deep passion for surfing and positive movement that pays it forward to future generations.
